Adult Summer Intensive

About the Intensive

The Esh Circus Arts Adult Summer Intensive is a program designed for intermediate-to-advanced circus arts students ages 16 and older who wish to deepen their studies through a rigorous three weeks of training, creative development, and community-building. The Summer Intensive will provide a structured training program to help students develop strength, flexibility, technical proficiency, and artistry. The program will culminate in a student showcase performance.


The Adult Summer Intensive program is available for students interested in pursuing focused training in any of the following disciplines:

Static Trapeze
Aerial Fabric
Aerial Hoop
Single Point Trap
Hand Balancing
Aerial Rope
Partner Acro/Hand-To-Hand

Program Schedule

Classes for the Adult Summer Intensive meet 3 days per week — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays — from 8:30 am until 3:30 pm. Students will have the opportunity to take advantage of self-directed training time on other days of the week, along with occasional workshops and scheduled rehearsals.


8:30am: Group Warm-Up
9:00am: Modern/Ballet Technique
9:55am: Physical Theater
10:50am: Group Conditioning
11:25am: Group Stretching
12:00pm: Lunch Break
1:00pm: Skill Work in Focus Discipline
2:15pm: Workshop


A showcase of student work-in-progress will take place at the end of the session at a local Somerville performance venue. Students, teachers, family, and friends will be invited to come see the fruition of three weeks of hard work and play!

Application & Program Requirements

To audition for the Adult Summer Intensive program, students are required to submit a written application, as well as a video submission that demonstrates both their specific and overall ability.

Applicants will be assessed on a variety of criteria, including:

  • Flexibility – Center splits, side bend, back bend, pike, etc.
  • Strength – Plank hold, hollow body hold, pull-ups or hollow hang, etc.
  • Discipline Skills – Demonstration of intermediate-to-advanced level of skill in a chosen discipline of focus.

Applications and video submissions are accepted on a rolling basis from March 1st – May 15th.

A deposit of $250 is due upon acceptance to the program.
Payment plans and need-based financial assistance are available.

Location and Facilities

Esh Circus Arts is a 5000 square foot facility, with carpet bonded foam flooring throughout, and rig points up to 19 feet of height.

We are located in vibrant Somerville, MA, a short walk from the Harvard Square and Porter Square MBTA stops, and steps from culturally-rich Union Square.

For students who reside outside of the Boston Metro area, Esh can provide connections for home-stay options as requested.

Program Instructors

Summer Intensive is led by Esh Circus Arts co-owner Ellen Waylonis and management team member Johnny Blazes. As life-long performers and passionate educators, Ellen and Johnny imbue the program with the value of balancing rigorous athletic training with artistic and theatrical dedication. They are supported by Esh’s award-winning, internationally-performing staff of coaches.
